European Flight Training | Multi Engine (Piston) Rating What is the Multi-Engine Rating?

The Multi-Engine Rating (MEP) extends the privileges of the Private Pilot's Licence or Commercial Pilot's Licence to allow the pilot to fly aircraft with more than one powerplant. It is of the utmost importance that flight instruction for the MEP rating is accompanied with structured ground school and appropriate preflight briefings. A relatively inexperienced pilot acting as pilot-in-command of a complex multi-engine aircraft must have sound theoretical knowledge, as well as flight skills, to be able to deal with any eventuality. This can only be ensured through careful and thorough instruction, in the ground and in the air. In EFT's experience, there is a temptation in some training organisations to proceed to the emergency section of the course without ensuring that the student has properly understood the differences in control techniques between single-engine and multi-engine aircraft. In MEP training -as with other courses- the phrase "don't run before you can walk" must be heeded to produce polished and safe flying skills. This is always the case at EFT.

Training for the MEP Rating (USA)

The MEP course consists of 6 hours of dual (with instructor) flight training and 7 hours of structured groundschool and briefings. An examination consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions must be answered prior to entering the MEP flight test with one of our in-house examiners. This test is designed to ensure that skill and knowledge is appropriate to operate a complex multiengine aircraft in all eventualities. A large portion of the test assesses the ability to respond to abnormal and emergency scenarios.
